Foxconn, Apple’s supplier, is expected to begin making AirPods at its facility in Hyderabad shortly. The production of these wireless earphones is anticipated to focus solely on exports. This initiative appears to be aligned with Apple's strategy to expand its manufacturing operations beyond China. Presently, India is home to the assembly of all variants in the latest iPhone 16 lineup, which includes the recently unveiled iPhone 16e. Key suppliers for Apple in India include Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics. According to a report from PTI, citing an industry insider who wished to remain anonymous, Apple has plans to initiate AirPods production for export at the Foxconn facility in Hyderabad. The source reportedly informed PTI, "Production is set to commence in April, but initially, it will be exclusively for export." The introduction of AirPods marks the second major Apple product to be assembled in India, following the iPhone units.
Currently, Apple is producing a selection of iPhone models in India. The commencement of manufacturing wireless earphones represents a crucial milestone in the company's efforts to diversify its production strategy. The Cupertino-based company aims to lessen its reliance on Chinese manufacturing as trade tensions between the two nations escalate. In 2023, Foxconn confirmed a $400 million (approximately Rs. 3,325 crore) investment for establishing the Hyderabad facility focused on AirPods production. Apple AirPods continue to dominate the global true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones market. A report from Canalys indicated that last year, Apple secured a significant 23.1 percent share of the worldwide TWS market, far surpassing Samsung, which held an 8.5 percent share.
The decision to manufacture AirPods in India comes amidst discussions about potential production reductions in light of reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, alongside Apple's $500 billion (around Rs. 43,61,100 crore) investment commitment in the United States. All variants in the iPhone 16 series, including the newly released iPhone 16e, are reportedly being assembled within India and are available both domestically and for export. Apple relies on its partnerships with Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics for iPhone production in the country. Previously, the company has also assembled a variety of iPhone models in India, such as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15.
