The iPhone 17 series is anticipated to feature significant upgrades to its display, particularly for the non-Pro models this year. However, recent information indicates that Apple might implement these enhancements while maintaining competitive pricing by eliminating a key technology in the screens. Previous reports had suggested that all variants of the iPhone 17 series would incorporate the 120Hz ProMotion display found in the Pro models, but it now appears that only the OLED display will support the 120Hz refresh rate, excluding the ProMotion functionality for the standard iPhone 17, 17 Plus, and 17 Air versions.

Users have been hoping for a 120Hz refresh rate display across all iPhone models for several years, which may come to fruition in 2025. However, offering the display without ProMotion means that the adaptive refresh rate feature won't be available for the iPhone 17, 17 Plus, or 17 Air models. As a result, the Always-On Display feature will likely remain available exclusively for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max variants. The absence of ProMotion means that the refresh rate will not adjust dynamically based on the content displayed, contrasting with the adaptive LTPO panels found in many Android devices. Additionally, using a 120Hz display without ProMotion could negatively impact the battery life of the iPhone 17 compared to having ProMotion enabled from the start. It is possible that Apple is considering production costs associated with including ProMotion in all iPhone 17 models, and omitting it from the regular versions could help keep prices aligned with current rates. Regardless, many may argue that any refresh rate above 60Hz is preferable to a 60Hz display on a phone priced above Rs 80,000 in the market.

We remain hopeful that Apple will surprise everyone by introducing ProMotion across all iPhone 17 models this year; however, this report provides an initial indication of potential changes. The iPhone 17 Air has generated significant interest among readers lately, largely due to its sleek aesthetics and the compromises that come with such a design. Rumor has it that Apple intends to utilize silicone carbon technology for the battery in this model, which should alleviate some concerns regarding standby time. The company is also expected to use a 7000 series aluminum alloy for the frame, ensuring that it strikes the right balance between durability and a slim design.
