Indian-Americans groups accuse Yale University of 'racial discrimination'

Over 130 Asian-American organizations including two Indian-American groups, have brought a  complaint against prestigious Yale University and two other Ivy League institutions accusing them of 'racial discrimination' in their admission practices.

Both Indian-American groups, the Global Organization of Los Angeles  Chapter and the American Society of Engineers of National Capital Chapter have joined a coalition of 130 Asian-American  groups and filed complaint with the US Departments of Education and Justice against Yale Brown University and Dartmouth College by Asian-American Coalition for Education (AACE).

According to the complaint, the three institutions are "engaged in unlawful discrimination against Asian-American applicants to their colleges" and participate in a "covert and insidious scheme to enforce race-based quotas in college admissions" in violation of the US Constitution.

"Although discrimination by elite colleges against Asian- American students is widespread, AACE and the joining organizations are bringing this complaint against the three named Ivy League Colleges because Brown University and Dartmouth College have maintained the lowest admission rates for Asian-American students, while Yale University not only maintains a relatively low admission rate for Asian-American applicants, but also engages in destroying admissions records at its law school," the complaint said.

The 37-page complaint issued to the Department of Justice and Education stated that, "Multiple studies show that racial biases, often coupled with a lack of understanding of Asian cultures, plague the college admissions process and have led to 'just-for-Asians' admissions standards that impose unfair and illegal burdens on Asian-American college applicants."

Authors of the report said that,  "With no factual support and ignoring the diverse background of Asian-American applicants, admissions officers base admissions decisions on stereotypes and racial biases, with apparent immunity. These racial stereotypes that are applied to Asian-American applicants are patently false and are contradicted by the achievements of Asian-Americans in many diverse fields."

IBTimes UK reported that, a spokesperson for Brown University said that, "Each year, we confront the challenge of admitting an entering class from among tens of thousands of excellent applicants. We consider each application individually based on many factors. We make admissions decisions on a case-by-case basis to build a well-rounded class that is both academically talented and diverse."
